Because the American rawhide had gone through a preservation process, it didn't shrink the same way as the British rawhide. The lengths given to us from the first chariot were useless. It was necessary to estimate how much rawhide was needed for each lashing. Here, Richard Wilcox and John Burke are estimating how much rawhide will be needed by making a test lashing out of cord.
